Mike Flanagan, by all reports, is a very busy man. It is not actually possible for me to list, here, all the projects with which he is involved, but they include developing a Carrie series; directing an Exorcist movie; and, you know, a little project called The Dark Tower.
But the man wants to write a Clayface movie. And, Variety reports, DC Studios has given him the go-ahead.
Clayface has been around since the 1940s; once upon a time the big pile of mud was just an actor-turned-bad-guy (who wore a horror movie mask). As is generally the case with long-running comic book villains, there have been many Clayfaces. I am partial to the one on Harley Quinn, who is voiced by Alan Tudyk and who nods back to the character’s roots with his own desire to be a thespian. But then, I tend to think all the villains on Harley Quinn are their superior selves.
Variety notes that in 2021, Flanagan tweeted that he was “really keen to do a standalone Clayface movie as a horror/thriller/tragedy.” I think we should all just sit with that idea for a minute. Body horror Clayface? Clayface who kills a loved one with his own goopy physical self? Clayface rises from the dirt reborn? Hmmmm.
The Batman director Matt Reeves is among the producers on this film. If there are plot details to know, they have not yet been announced. The film is also looking for a director, as Mr. Flanagan is too busy for that role. It’s expected to begin filming in 2025.
