The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Will Return for a Third Season

Surprising essentially no one, Prime Video has announced at long last that The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will return for a third season. The return to Middle-earth begins filming this spring, which means that it may be some time before the season actually arrives in front of viewers.

Prime also announced three directors for the upcoming season: returning directors Charlotte Brändström (who is also an executive producer) and Sanaa Hamri, and newcomer Stefan Schwartz (The Boys, Black Sails). Of course, the show continues to be overseen by showrunners J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay

There’s one more tidbit about the renewal, according to The Hollywood Reporter: The third season will come with a time jump. The logline, via THR, says, “Jumping forward several years from the events of season 2, season 3 takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last.”

If you had any questions after the season two finale, well, those may or may not get answered! Perhaps the showrunners have decided it’s time to stop messing around with rings, plural, and get to that real special one. Perhaps they will awkwardly explain the origins of some more characters’ names while they’re at it. (Sorry, I am never forgiving “Grand Elf.”)

The Rings of Power stars a sprawling ensemble cast that includes Morfydd Clark, Robert Aramayo, Charlie Vickers, Maxim Baldry, Sophia Nomvete, Markella Kavenagh, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Charles Edwards, and Daniel Weyman. The first two seasons are streaming on Prime Video. icon-paragraph-end
