A Ghostbusters Animated Feature Is in the Works

I ain’t afraid of no expanding Ghostbusters universe, and neither are the studios behind the franchise.

Today, Deadline broke the news that Netflix and Sony Animation are in talks to make an animated Ghostbusters feature.

Plot details are unknown, though apparently Kris Pearn, who was a storyboard artist for 2009’s Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, and director of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 as well as The Willoughbys, is on board to direct.

We’ve seen growing investment in the Ghostbusters franchise of late. There are the live-action movies we’ve gotten in the last few years, with the most recent one, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, coming out in early 2024. There’s also an animated television series in development that is separate from this feature project, though the same players—Sony Pictures and Netflix—are involved, along with Ghost Corps.

According to Deadline, the powers that be also hope that this animated feature will be to the franchise what Into the Spider-Verse movies have been for Spider-Man. That’s a set of high expectations, and it will be interesting to see what the look and feel of the animated film will be like.

The project is still in its early days, so it will likely be at least a couple of years (or more) before we get to watch a new, animated Ghostbusters film. icon-paragraph-end
