A Minecraft Movie Trailer Explains Everything You Didn’t Want to Know About Film’s Plot

When news broke that there was going to be a live-action film based on the video game, Minecraft, more than a few people wondered how the hell that was going to work.

You never know what you’re going to get with adaptations—I was extremely skeptical when I first heard of the Barbie movie, for example, and Greta Gerwig proved me wrong. But this latest trailer for A Minecraft Movie doesn’t give me confidence. In it, we learn the origin story for Jack Black’s character, Steve, who apparently was just some guy (a miner, in fact) who digs up a blue cube and is transported to a land of blocks.

The official synopsis for A Minecraft Movie reveals more of the plot, whether we want that info or not:

Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival!  Four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Eugene Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks)—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative… the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.

The movie is directed by Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess and is set to premiere in theaters on April 4, 2025.
