The dads are going to be sad (or at least stressed) in space again. Deadline has the news that the studio Skydance has bought an unpublished short story, “Drift,” for a nice chunk of change (“around $2 million”) with It director Andy Muschietti on board to direct the adaptation. The story is by Ben Queen and Jason Shuman, who will adapt their own work for the screen.
Deadline describes the move like this:
When his estranged son vanishes during a space mission, a once-legendary, now fallen from grace shuttle commander is pulled into a high-stakes hostage exchange in space to get his boy back from captors who are not from Earth. The comp is Gravity meets Arrival.
Queen and Shuman are also the minds behind Cola Wars, a project being directed by Judd Apatow. Both have previous TV and movie credits as well: Queen was a writer on the animated The Addams Family 2 and has a story credit on Cars 2, and Shuman is co-creator of the series Acapulco and has a long production resume.
Deadline writes, “These proof of concept short stories have emerged as something akin to the dizzying deals made for spec scripts decades ago.” Other short stories snapped up for potential adaptation include “The Caretaker” by Marcus Kliewer (with Sydney Sweeney set to star), “The Dwelling” by Aaron Jayh (with Michael B. Jordan producing and possibly starring), “My Wife and I Bought a Ranch” by Matt Query, and “Long Lost” by Colin Bannon (with Steven Spielberg set to produce).
No production timeline has been announced for Drift.[end-mark]
