Hysteria! Trailer Gets Metal During the Satanic Panic

There’s a series coming to Peacock just in time for Halloween that takes place in the 1980s and centers on a small town in the grip of a slew of murders and, of course, Satanic Panic.

The show is appropriately called Hysteria! It got its first trailer today, and it looks ridiculous. Here’s the official synopsis, which gives you the premise:

When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the “Satanic Panic” of the late 1980s, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band, until a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings, and reported “supernatural activity” triggers a leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them.

The trailer is confusing in tone but appears to be going for comedy horror. How much it leans into laughs versus screams is unclear, but the odds are good that there will at least be one metal song played, which may make you do either depending on a variety of factors.

Hysteria! comes from Matthew Scott Kane (Stitchers) and David Goodman (The Orville). It stars Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect), Julie Bowen (Modern Family, Happy Gilmore), Emjay Anthony (Physical, Chef), Chiara Aurelia (Cruel Summer, Luckiest Girl Alive), Kezii Curtis (Charm City Kings, Secret Headquarters) and Nikki Hahn (Magnum P.I., American Housewife). Recurring guest stars include Bruce Campbell, Garret Dillahunt, Nolan North, Elijah Richardson, Milly Shapiro, Allison Scagliotti, and Jessica Treska.

All episodes of Hysteria! can be streamed on Peacock starting October 18, 2024.
