Would you like to watch a trailer with a delightfully drastic tonal shift partway through? That’s what you get with Lazarus, the upcoming series from legendary Cowboy Bebop creator Shinichirō Watanabe. The first bit is bleak as hell, focusing on Dr. Skinner, the creator of a miracle drug that takes all pain away from anyone who ingests it. But pain-free living only lasts for three years. Then Skinner reveals that it was a trap, and anyone who took the drug will die in 30 days—unless someone can find him and the cure he’s hiding.
Enter Lazarus—and the big tonal swing. Lazarus is a group of superheroes. Lazarus is on Dr. Skinner’s tail. Lazarus likes big guns and throwing themselves into chaotic action. If Skinner is the devil, one member of Lazarus says, “I suppose that makes us the angels that are going to kick his ass back to hell.”
Well, okay then!
According to Deadline, Chad Stahelski (John Wick) is the designer behind Lazarus’s action sequences, while the score features Kamasi Washington, Floating Points, and Bonobo.
Adult Swim will air the series in English; each episode will be available on Max the next day. Subtitled episodes will be available on Adult Swim and Max 30 days later. Confusingly, the premiere is at midnight on Saturday, April 5th, but subsequent episodes arrive on Adult Swim at midnight on Thursdays, beginning April 10th.
