Spartacus: House of Ashur First Look Teases a History-Bending, Erotic Time

Starz has released its first teaser trailer for Spartacus: House of Ashur. A forty-or-so seconds—it’s short—but it manages to pack in a lot of suggestive shots of extremely fit people fighting (and kissing) with minimal clothing, as well as a glimpse of Nick Tarabay’s Ashur saying, “Begin.”

This spinoff series centered on Ashur is just the latest installation in Starz’s Spartacus franchise. It’s also a bit of revisionist history within that universe, as Tarabay’s character purportedly died on Mount Vesuvius at the end of 2012’s Spartacus: Vengeance.

The teaser also gives us a glimpse of Graham McTavish’s character, Korris. McTavish, whose previous credits include Outlander and The Witcher, is playing a former gladiator who is now Ashur’s Doctore. We also see Tenika Davis’ character, Achillia, a fierce gladiatrix who, in this teaser, looks fierce indeed.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Spartacus: House of Ashur will be a history-bending, erotic, thrilling, roller-coaster experience that builds on everything that made the original series a colossal hit. The series poses the question: what if Ashur, hadn’t died on Mount Vesuvius at the end of “Spartacus: Vengeance?” And what if he had been gifted the gladiator school once owned by Batiatus in return for aiding the Romans in killing Spartacus and putting an end to the slave rebellion?

Steven S. DeKnight, who was showrunner on the first season of Netflix’s Daredevil and creator of Starz’s original Spartacus series, is the spinoff’s executive producer and showrunner.

Spartacus: House of Ashur is set to premiere on Starz sometime this fall.
