Syracuse football coach Fran Brown is going viral for his thoughts on showering after losing.
“Honestly, I’ve got, like, a ritual when we lose,” Brown, 42, said during a press conference captured by CNY Central on Monday, November 11. “I didn’t even get into the shower until earlier this morning. I just be mad, brush my teeth. It’s like, ‘I don’t deserve soap. I don’t deserve to do all that.’ I’m just focused on trying to get back and try to make sure that our players mentally understand that I let them down.”
Over the weekend, Syracuse Orange lost to Boston College by six points. Instead of hitting the showers after the game, Brown said he prefers to analyze what went wrong.
“I just wake up all night,” he explained. “Especially when we lose. I wake up like, ‘Damn, that really happened that way.’ And then I just move on.”
Brown made it clear that he eventually grabs some soap and refreshes in the shower. But for now, he’s following a specific process as college football season continues.
“The only thing is my wife, I can’t sleep in the bed if we lose, because I’m not going to get in the shower for that day,” Brown explained. “I’m just mad. I just sit there and brush my teeth. That’s what I feel I have to do so y’all won’t say my breath stinks.”
“I’m just kind of locked in on certain things in certain ways,” he continued. “You gotta earn the right to do certain things. So winners get washed and losers just have to wait a little bit.”
Luckily for Brown’s wife, Syracuse has only lost three games this season.
Some football fans had strong opinions of Brown’s post-game confession. A majority of them, however, were hoping Syracuse experiences the least amount of losses possible.
“Syracuse, you have win, for Fran’s wife’s sake,” one fan wrote via X. Another user added, “Fran, it’s OK, you can get in the shower.”
As Brown continues his first year as head coach, his team is expected to travel to the West Coast to face off against the California Golden Bears on Saturday, November 16. Syracuse football will wrap up the season at home with games against UConn and Miami.
“Every day, whether I’m with my team or my family, I strive to live by D.A.R.T. – Detailed, Accountable, Relentless, and Tough,” Brown wrote via Instagram on November 6. “It’s not just a mindset; it’s a way of life, and I’m proud to see my team embody these values right alongside me.”
