Which 'Summer I Turned Pretty' Stars Are and Aren't Returning for Season 3

The Summer I Turned Pretty is coming to an end after season 3 — but is every fan favorite character returning for the final episodes of the show?

Prime Video’s hit series, which debuted in June 2022, is based on a book series of the same name by showrunner Jenny Han. The Summer I Turned Pretty focuses on Belly (Lola Tung) who gets caught up in a love triangle where after exploring her feelings for Conrad (Christopher Briney), she starts to reconsider whether his brother, Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno), is her perfect match.

In the original book trilogy, Belly made her final choice in We’ll Always Have Summer, which will presumably inspire the third season of the show. Fans, however, have questioned whether the show will follow the events of the book series or whether there will be changes.

Han hasn’t given much information away except to confirm that the third and final season hits the ground running, writing via Instagram in December 2024, “One thing I’ll say about season 3 of [The Summer I Turned Pretty] … there are no filler episodes.”

Fans have really high expectations about how The Summer I Turned Pretty will incorporate crucial book moments in season 3 — and so does Us. The hit Prime Video show, based on a book series of the same name by showrunner Jenny Han, focuses on a love triangle between Belly (Lola Tung), Conrad (Christopher Briney) […]

Prime Video also seems to have plans to expand the Summer I Turned Pretty universe.

“I will say stay tuned, but Jenny’s got some exciting surprises. So we’re thrilled about a season 3, and she’s got a vision for more,” Vernon Sanders, the head of television at Amazon and MGM Studios, told Deadline in September 2023. “This show is going to continue to be a huge centerpiece for us, and we absolutely have plans to continue building it. Jenny’s got great vision for where she wants to go with all of it, but we’re already hard at work developing complementary pieces.”

Prime Video confirmed the show would be returning in summer 2025 with an Instagram video that showed Tung, Briney, Casalegno, Sean Kaufman and Rain Spencer playing volleyball on the beach. Tung was later featured in the first promotional footage for season 3 where she recited a quote from the first book.

“For me, everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August,” she shared in the March 2025 video. “All year long, I count the days until I’m in that house.”

We’ll Always Have Summer offered Us a glimpse into Conrad’s state of mind so it comes as no surprise that Briney was front and center when production on season 3 picked up. The actor playfully poked fun at the show’s popular love triangle, telling InStyle in January 2024, “It’s all unreal expectations. It’s all ridiculous.”

Briney specifically mentioned his character’s story lines, including his college plans. “You’re not going to go to Stanford,” he quipped. “You’re not going to go to a beach town every summer and fall in love with your mom’s friend’s f—ing whatever. It’s not going to happen. It’s stupid. That’s not how life works.”

Despite having some notes, Briney said he was still a romance fan at heart, adding, “They really don’t [make them like they used to]. It was different. Netflix, you gotta step it up, bro. I’m just sayin.”

Speculation has been circulating about whether the third season will keep the love triangle outcome the same after the cast was seen filming in Paris. (For any fans who didn’t read Han’s books, there weren’t any scenes specifically set in Paris between the characters but Belly does — spoiler alert — travel the world at the end of the novel.)

Casalegno, for his part, previously showed his support for a narrative shakeup.

“I do feel like there’s a strong chance that that’s a possibility,” he exclusively told Us Weekly in June 2023 about the show potentially straying from the original events in the books. “Obviously, I know where [my character Jeremiah] ends up going and what ends up happening. But I don’t emphasize on that. Because I think Jenny writes it so well that I’m able to kind of get there naturally without having to force it a certain direction.”

Steven Conklin

Season 2 introduced Steven (Kaufman) and Taylor (Spencer) as a couple even though they weren’t explored in the books. Kaufman told Us he wasn’t concerned about Steven and Taylor’s future before filming on the final season started.

“I know for me, Steven not really being in the books takes some pressure off my back. It allows me to really put who I think I am into this character vs. trying to maybe be something I’m not,” he shared in August 2023. “I think in terms of Steven and Taylor’s arc together, it was a little freeing [when] nobody even knows it’s coming. There’s no expectation so I have fun with this scene partner I have.”

Kaufman continued: “I think [they can go the] distance. We’re going for speed. I think Steven and Taylor work really well together.”

Spencer was seen filming scenes for season 3 as fans prepare to see her story with Kaufman’s Steven get wrapped up.

“We had like multiple conversations with Jenny and [she has] such a clear picture in her head. She’s so good at navigating this world and making it so completely relatable,” she shared with Us at the time. “Like Sean said, [Stevan and Taylor] grew up together. So at least in Taylor’s point of view, she has loved this person in every single one of his dorky, weird and awkward phases. She’s just undeniably in awe of this person growing up. It’s like if you love someone in every single stage that they’ve had in their life, that doesn’t go away.”

The third season will follow Belly as she makes decisions about her future. Belly’s mother, Laurel (Jackie Chung), was featured heavily in We’ll Always Have Summer and that is expected to remain the same in the series.

Susannah Fisher

If there is one thing The Summer I Turned Pretty will do, it is bring Rachel Blanchard back for some angsty flashback scenes between Susannah and her sons — or Belly. Does anyone else already hear the Taylor Swift needle drop or is it just Us?

Cam Cameron

David Iacono isn’t expected to return as Cam in season 3 — but then again he wasn’t meant to appear in season 2, either. Iacono has remained booked and busy though with roles in films such as Jurassic World Rebirth and Fear Street: Prom Queen. Meanwhile on the small screen, Dead Boy Detectives, Hot Pink and The Chlorine Bible are some of Iacono’s newest releases.

Julia

In June 2024, Kyra Sedgwick confirmed she wouldn’t be reprising her role as Conrad and Jeremiah’s aunt, telling People, “I’m not in season 3. No, no, no. Spoiler alert.”

Skye

Since Julia isn’t returning, it is very likely that her child, Skye (Elsie Fisher), won’t make an appearance either. They were originally conceived as new characters for season 2 after not being mentioned in Han’s book series.

Shayla

Minnie Mills was introduced as Steven’s love interest in season 1 but was ultimately not asked back for future episodes.

“To everyone who loved Shayla, who felt empowered or inspired by her, she will always be in the first season for you to come back to whenever you need her, and if I ever get the chance, I would love to continue her story,” Mills wrote via Instagram in April 2023. “Thank you for supporting her, and thank you for supporting me. I could not have asked for a better cast, crew, or character for my first acting role, and I cannot wait to see what’s next.”

Mills added: “Playing Shayla was such a privilege, she taught me so much and helped me grow not only as an actor, but as a person. To be able to portray a piece of the representation I’ve always wanted to see on screen was a dream come true and meant the world to me.”
